The Big Knit 2015

Hello everyone!

Have you heard of The Big Knit? If not, stick around whilst I explain what it's all about, and why you should take part.

Big Knit

The Big Knit is an annual campaign hosted by Innocent Drinks, who encourage people around the country to get knitting little hats, which are then put on top of smoothie bottles. For each bottle sold, 25p is donated to Age Cymru, who use the money to provide elderly people with heating, hot meals and blankets, helping them to get through winter.

In this country, 24,000 people die needlessly every winter because of the cold weather. However, thanks to fundraisers like The Big Knit, we can work to bring this number down. Since the campaign was founded back in 2003, the population of Britain has helped to knit 4 million hats, which in turn has raised over £1.5 million for charity.

Last year, the Bangor Craft and Sewing Society collectively knitted 20 hats for The Big Knit, which would have gone on to raise £5 for Age Cymru - enough to provide an elderly person with a hot water bottle which would keep them warm through the night. This year, however, we would like to do even better!

If you head on over to the Innocent or Age Cymru website, you can find some amazing knitting patterns for all levels of ability, so everyone can get involved! Simply send your completed hats to:

The Big Knit
Age Cymru 13/14 Neptune Court
Vanguard Way
Cardiff
CF24 5PJ

along with a note stating the date, your name, address and how many hats you've made. Or, alternatively, bring them in to a society meeting! Any of our committee members will be more than happy to collect your knitted hats and post them off for you.

So, lets get knitting now, and raise enough money to help keep our elderly population safe and warm this winter! Do let us know how many hats you've knitted - you could even send a photo in to our Facebook page - and we'll keep score of how many are being made!

Thank you everyone, and happy knitting :)
